NHL jersey change: opportunity lost?

Now that all NHL and even American Hockey League teams have converted to the much ballyhooed RbK Edge uniform system, it seems fair game to take a look back and see who took advantage of the opportunity, and who, ah, missed out.

The change provided teams with a golden opportunity to introduce some nice new designs, colors and logos which, in some cases, were badly needed.

Never before had any of the four major North American professional team sports introduced such a sweeping uniform change as in the NHL this season. With new fabrics, different tailoring and altered colors, the change basically provided NHL clubs with a blank template.

The popular MIA hockey brand is about to disappear.

Made in America Sports had become a strong brand, particularly in custom design hockey gloves, so much so that Warrior Sports of Warren, Mich. recently acquired the company. Warrior, itself a newcomer to the hockey business, acquired MIA Sports and now plans to roll the company into its Warrior Hockey division.

“By acquiring (MIA), we now have the ability to drastically improve our pro exposure, increase our market share at the high end of the retail business, and improve our custom glove delivery,” says Neil Wensley, director of marketing for Warrior Hockey.

“Warrior is an up and coming company loaded with talent and ambition. I was convinced that warrior will become a force in the industry and making the decision to be part of it was an easy one,” says Michel Paul, owner of MIA.

For the past four years, including his first two NHL seasons, Crosby has used Sher-Wood brand sticks under an endorsement contract the Pittsburgh Penguins star signed with the Sherbooke, Que.-based company when he was just 16 years old.

That deal, which pays Crosby a reported C$150,000 per year, expired on Sept. 1, and Crosby has expanded his RbK deal to include sticks.
